Hi Mike, don't know if you remember me, I'm the red -haired guy that we've met several times at various nurseries.  Anyway hope you are doing well.  You were nice enough to sell me some worm magic and Biosol, and I love the stuff.  Most of the people at the rose society now use the two products based on my and Joel Ross's recommendation.

I would like to get some more biosol(50 lbs), and at least 5 gals of worm magic.  I live in Rancho Santa Fe, and would be glad to drive to where you are, or if you would like to see a garden that is truly flourishing ,and beautiful thanks to your products, I would love to show you my grounds.  whatever works for you. Let me know, and stay well...Jerry

BIOSOL pre plant fertilization with subsequent applications of liquid worm castings

Hi Mike,
I am attaching the first two of several photos showing the progress so far this season. These are Ed's Millennium, which are an heirloom variety similar to a Brandywine. In the past, the Verticillium typically appears when the plants (planted in the same location) are about 3' tall. These plants are now about 5.5' tall and should top 7' (top of wire cage). Since we have for many years planted the Brandywines and now switched to the Ed's Millennium, I can't say if the delayed development of the Verticillium is due to your products or the change of variety. Both Ed's and Brandywine are heirloom varieties and my expectation was that the infection would manifest itself at the same time. What IS odd however is that the un-sprayed plant has almost no evidence of Verticillium and the sprayed one has the most! Both are obviously healthy though. I will know more as season progresses.

HI Mike and John,
Bob has been one of my test gardens in Rancho Santa Fe California for the last 5 years. He has since converted to organic gardening. He sent me this report, I thought you guys would be interested since your products are being used in the garden. Steve Goto- Gototomato

OUOTE:

I thought that I would drop you a note to let you know how my garden grows. So far, so good. All the tomato plants are healthy. A couple have some yellow spotted leaves but they seem to be growing well. We have had a month of cool weather so not many plants have set fruit yet. I am hopeful that this year will be better than last. I am really happy that you forced me to adopt the organic fertilizers. They work much better than the chemicals. They seem to make the plants grow better and the fertilizer applications seem to last longer. I am a convert. When I run out of the fertilizer that you gave me I will need to know how and where to buy this stuff at the right price in large bags. I will give you a report on the various tomato varieties that I have planted this year when there is something to report. Until then, I hope that all is well with you. If you find yourself in my area, please stop by for a cup of coffee or glass of wine.

Mike - I hope you remember me, my name is Mary Loeza and my co-gardener and I received worm castings, liquid worm castings and BIOSOL from you to help our community garden.  We are using the garden to teach my children about where food comes from, now with the worm castings they are learning how excellent nutrients help plant growth.

We planted our first crops and they did excellent.  Now we are in tomato season and we are growing tomatoes, zucchini, watermelon, cantelope, chilis, green beans, flowers and we still have some onions in too.  Our tomatoes are really growing as if they are on steroids.  There is one plant that came up from a seed left last year,(a dried up tomato that got back into the dirt) and it is about 5 feet tall and 5 feet around with a zillion flowers on it.  We are amazed.  I am not 100% sure if this is how powerful the worm castings are but I am sure they helped.

I don't have the most recent pictures but here are some taken a couple weeks ago.  Oh and our zucchini, so far we have gotten about 25 medium sized ones and we only have 5 plants - I am spreading the word about the worm castings since I am sharing the zucchini with my co-workers.

Hi Michael Castro,
You were wanting me to let you know how everything worked out on the Biosol with my tomatoes Considering I started so late in the Year with the Biosol, So here It Is.

In June of 07 I ordered some Biosol from you. I'm writing you to let you know the results on my tomatoes. I have been raising tomatoes in the same 30 x 40' garden for years. Although I rotated them in the garden every year they started to get the tomato wilt. I ordered the Biosol from you and did what you said to do (considering it was late in the year) and it worked. Out of Fourteen plants I had only one Die from the Wilt. I also had a Bumper Crop and had tomatoes up till two weeks before Thanksgiving. I also found a place to buy the Biosol from Hodges Nursery Its about 45 miles North of where I live. I would like to thank you for all of your help and advice and for shipping the Biosol  to me in June. Great Product!!!! Very satisfied!

Thank You

Liquid Worm Castings Seed Treatments

Eggplant Seeds were soaked in Liquid Worm Castings before sowing. All of these seeds were planted at the same time. The smaller plants in the foreground were untreated and the larger plants were treated. The germination was much faster, and the number of seedlings that germinated was higher. The development afterwards was very pronounced. Seeds can benefit from a drenching in Liquid Worm Castings before seeding.

Treatments Using Liquid Worm Castings Tomatoes.

These were the symptoms of "Heirloom" tomatoes infected with Fusarium Wilt in Del Mar California

"Image: Mike Castro""Image: Tomatoe Fusarium"

1. Grower Robert Ramp, Mike Castro-SOS and Biologist Ron Baniaga. 2. Base of plant showing active fungus.3. Infected stems.

Comments: Almost 100% of the plants in Robert's Garden were infected to some degree, and some had to be pulled out completely. The best recommendation would have been to pull out the whole garden and plant a different type of crop that is not affected by Fusarium for at least three years. The varieties are mostly Heirloom types furnished by Steve Goto's nursery and are open-pollinated and usually susceptible since they are varieties that were collected prior to inbred resistance by hybridizing.

Treatments: TRUNK SPRAY and foliage mixed at 5:1

                                      "Image: Spraying Tomatoes"

We sprayed Liquid Worm Castings Tea directly onto the stems and all over the plant at a 5:1 mix with water and Yucca Extract. We also treated the soil with a 1" Layer of Wormagic Castings and Compost Mix and then applied a soil drench with a 5:1 mixture.

Luis applies Soil Drench in a hole being prepared for new plants.

The stem lesions have completely dried and no active fungus is present. The stem has suberized and even though there was some girdling effect, the plants are still actively growing with fruit up to 3" in diameter as of 6/03/06. We expect a good harvest.

                                   "Image: Robert Ramp"

One happy grower!

Additional Comments: The treatment will continue every two weeks until harvest is well underway. Where completely dead plants were pulled out, a treatment with solid worm castings mixed with compost and liquid castings was done and susceptible varieties will be planted right back in the same holes to see if there is still fungus present. We will present a follow up when the results are in!

Treatment for "Black Layer"

Skyline Golf Club Valley Center California

Symptoms: Due to a high water table and many years of petroleum based fertilizer use, the drainage on this fairway was non-existent. French drains had to be installed up to 3 feet deep just to get water to run off of the fairway. The pH in some areas was above 9 and the electrical conductivity was also excessively high. The ground was compacted with a black strata or "slick" caused by the deflocculation from the anerobic bacteria activity that had taken over. This slick was impenetrable and irrigation had to be cut way down to the point where the grass could not survive. There was still some dormant bermuda that could be rescued.

Treatment: The Superintendent aerated the entire fairway taking out "plugs".

Fairway After Aeration. Some areas were completely bald with no grass at all and would need to be re-seeded eventually.

Treatment Materials:

The fairway was treated with WORMagic Liquid Worm Castings with Yucca Extract Biosol 7-2-3 Organic Granular Fertilizer and 1 application of Liquid Gypsum through the irrigation system.

Penetration was re-established after the pH was buffered with the aerobic microbe activity re-established, and this is the fairway after 3 months and is now ready for re-seeding. Notice the boulders for point of reference.

There are still some salt pockets, but these will be filled in with the re-seeding. The grass that exists is the Bermuda that was dormant.

WORMagic Liquid Castings and WORMagic Biosol 7-2-3 Combination Growth Response in Nursery Plants

El Plantio Nursery Escondido, California

In the following photos, Liquid Worm Castings were applied as a "Soil Drench" mixed at 5 parts water and 1 part Tea and applied to healthy growing plants at the nursery. The Biosol granular fertilizer was applied by hand at a rate of approx 1/3 cup per 8" pot. We chose these plants because there was a noticeable difference in the stage of growth and color of the three rows on the right. Notice the size and color compared to the plants on the left. There is no disease or other growth factors and all the plants are healthy. The object was to demonstrate the growth response to the combination application of WORMagic Liquid Worm Castings and Biosol 7-2-3 Granular Organic Fertilizer.

May 23, 2006

The Liquid Castings "Tea" was applied as a "Drench" at 5:1 by SOS Sales Manager Luis Arvizu and El Plantio owner Bill Snapp.

This follow up picture was taken on June 5, 2006. Not for any particular reason, but we just happened to be there on this date, but "Green Up" probably occurred after about 8 days. notice the size and color of the three rows on the right compared to the "Before " photo.

Humus Growth

Biosol & Biosol Mix

Research Analysis and Summary’s

Humus Growth

Ø    5 years after 1 application of Biosol mix and Biosol,  the  microbial biomass equaled 37 and 34 years of natural succession

For any re-establishment of vegetation it is essential that microbial activity is restored to ensure carbon and nutrient turnover.  The mediator of this process is the microbial biomass.  Thus if the microbial biomass levels of a reclaimed site approach those of comparable ecosystems, one important part of the reclaimed system has been re-established successfully.

We compare the microbial biomass of two revegetation trials (established in 1982, elevation 2600-2800 m above sea level) with those of an adjacent natural succession.  This succession is comprised of a series of recessional moraines of different ages.  Before revegetation, the soils were bare and had very low microbial biomass levels.  After 5 years the mineral fertilizer equaled 9 years of natural selection, Biosol Mix equaled 37 years and Biosol equaled 34 years.

Root Formation & Nutritional Condition

Root Formation & Nutritional Condition

Ø    Biosol is perfectly well tolerated by plants, which responded with better growth, a deeper green of the canopy, the formation of a more complex root system, and a well balanced nutritional condition.

The special organic fertilizer BIOSOL was tested with regard to its effect on potted spruces cultivated on brown earth/semi-podsol and /or virgin soil substrates. The variants compared in the trials also included untreated controls and a mineral fertilizer variant. Particularly favorable results were achieved when appling Biosol on virgin soils with a low sorptive effect, where easily soluble mineral fertilizers can cause root etchings and are often washed away quickly.  According to these results, Biosol can be recommended as a fertilizer for afforestaions in high altitudes and on virgin soils; the application of Biosol is a suitable measure to be taken in order to improve the growth and general health of the plants and to lessen the stress by transplanting.

PH Concentrations

PH Concentrations

Ø    The positive effects of Biosol may have been able to reduce ph or salt concentrations in the soil solution, or improved physical stability due to the formation of stable aggregates.

Fly-ash deposits are usually difficult to reclaim due to poor chemical and physical properties.  Using different kinds of composts, organic amendments, soil conditioners and mineral fertilizers, we established a reclamation trial on an ash-dump in the Helmstedt mining area. Vitality of the grasses sown, as well as the percent of plant cover were highest on the plots amended with bark compost and BIOSOL.

Tree Fertilization

Tree Fertilization

Ø    Due to its slow release characteristics BIOSOL is considered superior to soluble inorganic fertilizers for high elevations sites with soils of low absorption capacity and high leaching potential.

BIOSOL was tested as an alternative to mineral fertilizers in field experiments designed at revitalizing Norway spruce stands affected by forest decline in Lech, Vorarlberg. Basal area increment responded positively and significantly to both mineral fertilizer and Biosol. Foliar nutrient levels increased only slightly and no major changes in soil microbial activity or mycorrhizal statue was observed. Thus fertilization with moderate amounts of fertilizer seems to be a safe method to increase tree vigour without dramatically changing site parameters.

Iron Chlorosis Deficiencies

Iron Chlorosis Deficiencies

Ø    Biosol and Biosol Mix fertilizers alleviate iron nutrition deficiencies of the plants when the level of available iron is low.

In another trial in a vineyard it was observed that chlorosis (Iron deficiency) of grapes was reduced after fertilization with Biosol.

Explanation of:  Hydroxamate Siderophores

Iron is an essential micronutrient for plants. Deficiency of iron causes growth disorder (iron chlorosis for example). One of the reasons for iron deficiency is that the iron is fixed very strongly in the soil and is not available for the plants. Hydroxamate siderophores are able to change the structures where the iron is fixed. So the iron can be used by the plants. Hydroxamate siderophores are produced by micro-organisms (fungi or bacteria) in the soil.

In this study the researches tried to find out whether if it is possible to rise the content of hydroxamate siderophores in soil through fertilization. They tested Biosol, Bactosol, chicken dung and grape mark compost.
The results indicate that Biosol as well as Bactosol lead to remarkable higher concentrations of siderophores.

Disease Resistance

Ø    Dry fungal biomass of dried mycelium (Biosol)  is not only an organic fertilizer providing nutrients to crop plants and improving humus in the soil, but also a good inducer of resistance against root diseases such as Fusariem wilt.  Its application may have multiple effects for both crop nutrition and crop protection.  It was recently reported that dried mycelium applied to the soil protected corn plants against fusarium.

Nematode Control

Ø    Dry fungal biomass of dried mycelium (Biosol) seems to provide partial control of nematodes under natural conditions.  Partial control may gradually build up to almost complete control of the nematode in the following season if treatments of dry mycelium are repeated.  Such a strategy may well fit in with nematode control in Organic farming.

Plant Growth

Ø    Dry mycelium was proved by this study, as well as other studies to behave as an efficient organic fertilizer.  Plant growth was enhanced several fold in treated plots compared to controls.

Ø    DM significantly reduced galling by 40%-53%

Ø    Shoot growth of tomato was enhanced relative to controls by 150% to 173%

Ø    Shoot fresh weight was increased by 159%-251%
